Rotterdam, autumn 1944: 19-year-old Jan experiences everyday wartime life and winters of hunger in the city occupied by the Germans. At first he was lucky and escaped the brutal crackdown with which the National Socialists deported thousands of young men to forced labor. But at the beginning of January 1945 everything changed. He was deported to Germany to work for the Nazis from then on. A journey into the unknown begins…

The visual novel “Forced Abroad” is based on original diary entries and tells a previously little-known chapter of German history – for the first time in the form of a game! Immerse yourself in Jan’s notes, influence the plot with your decisions, and collect collectibles for your own memory album. How will the war end for Jan?

“Forced Abroad – Days of a Forced Laborer” was developed by PAINTBUCKET GAMES, the makers of the award-winning game “Through the Darkest of Times”, in cooperation with the NS-Documentation Center Munich. Illustrations by the renowned artist Barbara Yelin were used for the visualization. The game is part of the digital project “Departure Neuaubing. European Stories of Forced Labour”.
